This week various companies began to make bids to run a new TV station for Birmingham. We followed one of the bidders, City TV Broadcasting, as they made a promotional video and we found out about their plans for a TV station that will cover the city.

LADYWOOD MUSICIANS IN RUNNING FOR CONCERT SUCCESS

Top ten recording star and former Ladywood School pupil, Jaki Graham, will be headlining a concert at Symphony Hall to celebrate the 50th year of Jamaican independence in July. Special guests at the event will be members of the Jamaican Olympic squad who will be based in Birmingham whilst training for the Olympic Games. Another Ladywood musician, veteran saxophonist, Andy Hamilton, will also be playing at the concert.

Ladywood Arts & Leisure Centre at 10.15am on Friday 30 March 2012 with the help of a 1954 Birmingham City Transport double decker bus.

What a wonderful time we had today meeting everyone with Yardley Wood Bus Club's beautiful old bus. Thank you to the organisers and a huge thank you to the children for being such great photo models and such fantastic singers! SOLDIERS GIVEN FREEDOM OF THE CITY

230 soldiers representing five Regiments of the army were in Victoria Square to receive the Freedom of the City. It was Birmingham's way of saying thank you to them for the work they do in this country and overseas. We interviewed the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Anita Ward, and her son Lance Sergeant Vince Hockley. He was badly wounded in Afghanistan, and after treatment is preparing to go back again! Major General George Norton, who is in charge of the soldiers, spoke exclusively to TNT News. We filmed the troops as they proudly marched through the City Centre with 'drums beating, bayonets fixed and Colours flying'. It was a memorable occasion and hundreds of people applauded them.

LEARNING TO SWIM AT MONUMENT ROAD BATHS

Rita and Eva Trentham, two former users of Monument Road baths talk about learning to swim.
The interviews were conducted a few years ago, since then Eva has passed away, but thanks to TNT and the Ladywood History Group her memories live on.

Eva talks about how her school friend at St John's School, Lizzie Dipple,was saved from drowning by her teacher, Miss Baggs and how she was taught to swim with help of a long pole with a hoop
on it! Rita talks about her hand knitted woolly costume that weighed her down in the water.

UNHAPPY ANNIVERSARY FOR LADYWOOD BATHS

Ladywood's Monument Road baths closed for the final time in February 1992, an amazing twenty years ago this month! The building was demolished in 1994 and since then local people have been campaigning to have a new baths built.
This is how TNT presenter Darren Cannan reported the closure of the much loved baths in the March 1992 edition of 'Tonight in Ladywood'.

Christmas highlights from December 1991 featuring TNT's coverage of the switching on of the Christmas tree lights at the International Convention Santa, er, Centre, with pupils from George Dixon Junior School and the Lord Mayor, Councillor Bill Turner.

Also pupils from Nelson School were joined by councillors Pat Sever and Bryan Bird to celebrate the start of work on a new park .This park became known as Cambridge Street Park and it is behind the Repertory Theatre off Cambridge Street.
The hoardings around the site were featured on the TV programme Challenge Anneka.

Pushkin, a cat at the Oratory has written a book and Princess Michael of Kent joined TNT at the launch of the book. Michael looks at film from 1974 about the Waterworks Tower which faced demolition, but still exists today.
Don't forget Christmas: there is film of the Brindleyplace Santa Fun Run, Birmingham's Christmas Parade and Carols from Tesco at Five Ways, where pupils raised £111 in 45 minutes.

THE OPENING OF THE GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET

This year the German Market has 193 stalls stretching from Centenary Square to the Bull Ring.
TNT was at the official opening and we interviewed Volker Stein, the Deputy Mayor of Frankfurt about the importance of links between the two cities.

In this edition we celebrate Armed Forces Day with film of the Veterans' Parade in Centenary Square. There is an interview with World War II veteran Ron Needle, who was in a Lancaster bomber that crashed in France in 1945. He has since been back to the site and met the people who rescued him from the wreckage of the plane.
We feature the 20th anniversary of the opening of the International Convention Centre by H M The Queen, look at the Ladywood Games and report on the controversial St John's island traffic scheme on Ladywood Middleway.
TNT also reports on the sea cadets at TS Vernon, on vintage cars in Victoria Square as part of Drive It Day, North Summerfield's gardening competition and a new play area on Bath Row. If that's not enough there is also film of the Corpus Christi parade from the Oratory Church, a feature on the origins of Osler Street and even roller blading in Brussels!

Fans of Birmingham City usually only visit Wembley as tourists, but in February 2011 history was made when Blues played in their first major final for 48 years… and they beat the favourites Arsenal to lift the Carling Cup.
In this special programme watch the goals from Birmingham City’s 2-1 win, with the goals interpreted by pupils from Ladywood based Oratory Primary School.
See also footage and photographs submitted by TNT viewers who were at Wembley for the historic occasion and watch highlights of the Civic Reception that was held at St Andrew’s on 6 March 2011.
The day before the reception Birmingham were thrashed by local rivals West Bromwich Albion, so a real relegation fight is now on. Let’s hope both Blues and West Brom will still be in the top division next season, but for now enjoy reliving ‘The Day Blues Won the Cup’.

INDUSTRY IN LADYWOOD IN WORLD WAR I

Ladywood has always been known as an industrial area. Large factories employed thousands of workers. During World War I many women took up employment in the factories helping to manufacture items that were vital for the War Effort. Belliss & Morcom made steam compressors and munitions, whilst other companies like Bulpitt & Sons, which made pots, pans and kettles under the name Swan Brand, starting making munitions as well. Employment cards that were found by The Ladywood History Group, show us the injuries suffered by the workforce during the war and how they coped when they returned to work

THREE LADYWOOD MEN WHO MADE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

The stories of three local men who gave their lives for freedom, told by their surviving relatives, using photographs, medals and other memorabilia, as told to the TNT History Show.

The three men are George Edwards of the Rifle Brigade from Icknield Port Road whose body was never found and he is named on the Menin Gate, Joe Belcher a M&B brewery worker is listed on their memorial at Cape Hill and Alfred Lane from Five Ways who is named on the Ploegstreet Memorial.

FROMELLES: TNT AT OPENING OF NEW WAR CEMETERY IN FRANCE

In July 2010 the Prince of Wales attended the dedication ceremony of a new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Fromelles in northern France.
Thousands of British and Australian soldiers were killed in a nearby battle in 1916 and many were dumped in huge mass graves by the German forces. Lembis Englezos, an Australian schoolteacher discovered the existence of the graves and, eventually, persuaded the authorities that the graves should be exhumed and wherever possible the bodies should be identified and given individual headstones in the new cemetery.
Lembis Englezos and fellow Aussie Tim Whitford, whose relative was the first to be identified from the mass graves.
In July 2010 his ambition was achieved when the Prince of Wales attended the dedication service at Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery.

TNT Breaking News - City Centre Fire Cecil Street - 27th May 2010

A factory fire in Cecil Street off Newtown Row broke out last night.
Around 100 firefighters were sent to the scene and the fire was thought to be in a factory used to store paint, The good news was that no injuries have been reported although poisonous fumes and asbestos fibres were given off in the blaze.

On 25 May 2010 TNT was featured on Central News at the unveiling of the bench to commemorate the life of former Oratory School headboy and Dunkirk veteran Herbie Carter 1916-2007. It’s a shame they didn’t mention TNT by name, especially as they used some of our film! Herbie’s story was featured in our April 2010 programme and the commemoration will be on the June 2010 edition of ‘Tonight in Ladywood’.

A reporter on the national Afro Caribbean newspaper ‘The Voice’ saw extracts of the interview with Johnson Beharry VC that appeared on the April edition of ‘Tonight in Ladywood’. She was so impressed that she wrote this article that appeared in the paper on 17 May 2010.

Cardinal Newman Miracle Man Jack Sullivan Visits Oratory

Deacon Jack Sullivan from Boston USA, who was cured of a crippling spinal disease after praying to Cardinal Newman, founder of the Oratory Church, visited Ladywood on 11 November 2009. In an exclusive interview with TNT he told how the Vatican earlier this year approved the cure as a miracle and Newman is likely to be made a saint next year.

Albert Gill Ladywood VC winner

In October 1916 the London Gazette announced that Albert Gill of Ladywood was to be awarded the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious award for gallantry that can be presented to British & Commonwealth forces.

Sergeant Gill paid with his life for his gallantry. He was killed in July 1916 at Delville Wood in France.
TNT reporter, Alex, visited the site of the battle and presents this report from the cemetery where
Albert Gill was buried.

The key points of Key Hill Cemetery Heritage Open Day

This was held on the weekend of 12-13 September 2009. The Lord Mayor, Cllr Wilkes unveiled a restored memorial to the Tangye family. The Tangyes were manufacturers in Birmingham and they made a name for themselves all over the world.
The steamship Great Eastern was launched with the help of hydraulic jacks made by the Tangyes and this made them famous. Dick Empson who is chairman of the Friends of Key Hill Cemetery says: ‘The Tangyes launched the Great Eastern and you could say that the Great Eastern launched Tangyes because it made them popular’.

When we were at Hill 62 in Ypres on the World War I battlefields we saw some of Tangyes lifting gear that had been dug up from a field. It is on our Hill 62 report.

Birmingham City v Aston Villa Sunday 13 September 2009.

There were many empty seats at St Andrew’s for this local derby game. This was possibly because the tickets were so expensive. Some people paid £48 or maybe even more for tickets.

For those of you who couldn’t afford to go, or didn’t want to pay that much TNT has film of the goal that won the game. This match action looks slightly different to what you may have seen on Sky Sports! Even Blues fans might enjoy seeing this version!

200th anniversary of the death of Matthew Boulton

It was 200 years ago to the day that Matthew Boulton died.
Many thousands of people travel along Broad Street everyday and go past his statue without knowing anything about him. Now our film will help to tell people who he is and what he did.
He was a wealthy, industrial person who helped to set up manufacturing in Birmingham.
Wreaths were laid and it was a very respectful short service to mark his death.
I am glad I was able to be there to commemorate his past.

Ed Miliband Minister for Climate Change visits Ladywood

Ed Miliband MP for Climate Change visited the Summerfield Eco village. We do not often get government ministers in Ladywood so TNT was determined to be there. We managed to get an exclusive interview him. He seemed really keen in what he was talking about and was interested in what we do at TNT News.

It was interesting for us to see the minister’s public relations team. I think there were at least four of them and they all seemed scared stiff at the thought of us interviewing him, perhaps incase we asked awkward questions!
They wanted us to go into a separate room and wait for him to finish his tour before allowing us to interview him.

Fromelles, Northern France: World War I Mass Graves Revealed

Experts have revealed, during a major archaeological dig, that the remains of around 300 World War I soldiers are likely to be discovered at Fromelles in northern France. The remains of a number of bodies have already been discovered and various artefacts uncovered and identified. Most of the bodies are likely to be Australian and British soldiers, buried by German forces after Australia’s bloodiest battle in 1916, which costs the lives of 1,700 Aussie and 500 British soldiers, some of whom may have come from Birmingham.
The team of investigators are hoping to be able to identify the remains of as many of the bodies as possible and lay them to rest in individual graves in a new cemetery that is currently under construction. In April 2009, TNT News visited the site and compiled a special report, which is posted here for the first time. It gives an account of what happened and what is likely to happen in the future. There is a section on the TNT website devoted World War I and the Ladywood History Group is compiling a booklet about Ladywood people who were involved in World War I.
This will be available in November 2009.

We redesigned our studio and Robin who now works at ITN gave us some ideas. We used most of them, but moved the plasma screen to the front. This is like they do on ‘The One Show’.
We also ‘found’ a big plant to go in the corner to complete our new look. What do you think of it?

We have been given some really good feedback from people about our DVD that we made about the First World War. We are still getting praise; an article was in Carl Chinn’s ‘Brummagem’ magazine for February 2009.
