FROMELLES: TNT AT OPENING OF NEW WAR CEMETERY IN FRANCE

In July 2010 the Prince of Wales attended the dedication ceremony of a new Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at Fromelles in northern France.
Thousands of British and Australian soldiers were killed in a nearby battle in 1916 and many were dumped in huge mass graves by the German forces. Lembis Englezos, an Australian schoolteacher discovered the existence of the graves and, eventually, persuaded the authorities that the graves should be exhumed and wherever possible the bodies should be identified and given individual headstones in the new cemetery.
Lembis Englezos and fellow Aussie Tim Whitford, whose relative was the first to be identified from the mass graves.
In July 2010 his ambition was achieved when the Prince of Wales attended the dedication service at Fromelles (Pheasant Wood) Military Cemetery.

TNT Breaking News - City Centre Fire Cecil Street - 27th May 2010

A factory fire in Cecil Street off Newtown Row broke out last night.
Around 100 firefighters were sent to the scene and the fire was thought to be in a factory used to store paint, The good news was that no injuries have been reported although poisonous fumes and asbestos fibres were given off in the blaze.

Central News features TNT’s Dunkirk + 70 Commemoration

On 25 May 2010 TNT was featured on Central News at the unveiling of the bench to commemorate the life of former Oratory School headboy and Dunkirk veteran Herbie Carter 1916-2007. It’s a shame they didn’t mention TNT by name, especially as they used some of our film! Herbie’s story was featured in our April 2010 programme and the commemoration will be on the June 2010 edition of ‘Tonight in Ladywood’.

City of Culture Bid: TNT represent youngsters of Birmingham

The report has been sent to the new Government as part of the City Council’s official bid to become City of Culture in 2013.

TNT has been lucky enough to meet Johnson Beharry VC who won his award for two outstanding acts of bravery whilst in Iraq. In this ten minute TNT News Special Report Johnson tells his remarkable story.

A reporter on the national Afro Caribbean newspaper ‘The Voice’ saw extracts of the interview with Johnson Beharry VC that appeared on the April edition of ‘Tonight in Ladywood’. She was so impressed that she wrote this article that appeared in the paper on 17 May 2010.

St Mark’s Estate 40th Birthday celebrations

Cardinal Newman Miracle Man Jack Sullivan Visits Oratory

Deacon Jack Sullivan from Boston USA, who was cured of a crippling spinal disease after praying to Cardinal Newman, founder of the Oratory Church, visited Ladywood on 11 November 2009. In an exclusive interview with TNT he told how the Vatican earlier this year approved the cure as a miracle and Newman is likely to be made a saint next year.

Albert Gill Ladywood VC winner

In October 1916 the London Gazette announced that Albert Gill of Ladywood was to be awarded the Victoria Cross, the most prestigious award for gallantry that can be presented to British & Commonwealth forces.

Sergeant Gill paid with his life for his gallantry. He was killed in July 1916 at Delville Wood in France.
TNT reporter, Alex, visited the site of the battle and presents this report from the cemetery where

The key points of Key Hill Cemetery Heritage Open Day

This was held on the weekend of 12-13 September 2009. The Lord Mayor, Cllr Wilkes unveiled a restored memorial to the Tangye family. The Tangyes were manufacturers in Birmingham and they made a name for themselves all over the world.
The steamship Great Eastern was launched with the help of hydraulic jacks made by the Tangyes and this made them famous. Dick Empson who is chairman of the Friends of Key Hill Cemetery says: ‘The Tangyes launched the Great Eastern and you could say that the Great Eastern launched Tangyes because it made them popular’.

When we were at Hill 62 in Ypres on the World War I battlefields we saw some of Tangyes lifting gear that had been dug up from a field. It is on our Hill 62 report.

Birmingham City v Aston Villa Sunday 13 September 2009.

There were many empty seats at St Andrew’s for this local derby game. This was possibly because the tickets were so expensive. Some people paid £48 or maybe even more for tickets.

For those of you who couldn’t afford to go, or didn’t want to pay that much TNT has film of the goal that won the game. This match action looks slightly different to what you may have seen on Sky Sports! Even Blues fans might enjoy seeing this version!

200th anniversary of the death of Matthew Boulton

It was 200 years ago to the day that Matthew Boulton died.
Many thousands of people travel along Broad Street everyday and go past his statue without knowing anything about him. Now our film will help to tell people who he is and what he did.
He was a wealthy, industrial person who helped to set up manufacturing in Birmingham.
Wreaths were laid and it was a very respectful short service to mark his death.
I am glad I was able to be there to commemorate his past.

Ed Miliband Minister for Climate Change visits Ladywood

Ed Miliband MP for Climate Change visited the Summerfield Eco village. We do not often get government ministers in Ladywood so TNT was determined to be there. We managed to get an exclusive interview him. He seemed really keen in what he was talking about and was interested in what we do at TNT News.

It was interesting for us to see the minister’s public relations team. I think there were at least four of them and they all seemed scared stiff at the thought of us interviewing him, perhaps incase we asked awkward questions!
They wanted us to go into a separate room and wait for him to finish his tour before allowing us to interview him.

Fromelles, Northern France: World War I Mass Graves Revealed

Experts have revealed, during a major archaeological dig, that the remains of around 300 World War I soldiers are likely to be discovered at Fromelles in northern France. The remains of a number of bodies have already been discovered and various artefacts uncovered and identified. Most of the bodies are likely to be Australian and British soldiers, buried by German forces after Australia’s bloodiest battle in 1916, which costs the lives of 1,700 Aussie and 500 British soldiers, some of whom may have come from Birmingham.
The team of investigators are hoping to be able to identify the remains of as many of the bodies as possible and lay them to rest in individual graves in a new cemetery that is currently under construction. In April 2009, TNT News visited the site and compiled a special report, which is posted here for the first time. It gives an account of what happened and what is likely to happen in the future. There is a section on the TNT website devoted World War I and the Ladywood History Group is compiling a booklet about Ladywood people who were involved in World War I.
This will be available in November 2009.

We redesigned our studio and Robin who now works at ITN gave us some ideas. We used most of them, but moved the plasma screen to the front. This is like they do on ‘The One Show’.
We also ‘found’ a big plant to go in the corner to complete our new look. What do you think of it?

We have been given some really good feedback from people about our DVD that we made about the First World War. We are still getting praise; an article was in Carl Chinn’s ‘Brummagem’ magazine for February 2009.
On the front page of the magazine Carl says:’ A trio of Ladywood youngsters emphasise that history belongs to all ages with a compelling and sensitive account of their visit to Ypres’.
